About the author: Mona Arshi was born in West London, where she still lives. She worked as a human rights lawyer with Liberty for a decade before receiving a master’s in creative writing from the University of East Anglia. Her debut poetry collection Small Hands was published in 2015, winning the Forward Prize for Best First Collection. Mona Arshi regularly appears on BBC Radio 4. Her poems have been published in The Sunday Times, The Guardian and the Times of India and most recently the London Underground.

We discuss Gudrun by Lucy Catherine. It is a Viking epic of love, revenge and faith inspired by the Icelandic sagas.

It is a bit of a departure for us. Gudrun is a BBC Radio 4 drama, and it is also available through Penguin audiobooks. You can listen to all 7 seasons of Gudrun on BBC Sounds.

As a young woman growing up in 11th century Iceland, Gudrun must forge her path through a world of unearthly beauty yet uncompromising harshness. The tale begins in her youth, with her childhood friends Kjartan and Bolli – but the love the two boys have for Gudrun causes a deathly enmity between them that leaves her reeling.

Gudrun is based on the famous Icelanders' saga known as The Laxdoela Saga. Written in the 13th century, it tells of people in the Breiðafjörður area of Iceland from the late 9th century to the early 11th century.

The cast features Kate Phillips and Samantha Dakin. It was directed by Sasha Yevtushenko, Gemma Jenkins, and Jessica Dromgoole
